Amidst rising anti-Asian hate crimes triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, Oakland’s Chinatown has become a focal point for the Chinese community, grappling with an upsurge in various criminal activities. The Blue Angels, a Chinese grassroots volunteer patrol group, was formed during the 2021 Chinese Lunar New Year. Comprising local merchants and residents who have experienced firsthand the devastating impact of crimes and violence in Chinatown, they have emerged as the unsung heroes of Oakland’s Chinatown. Faced with attacks on their shops and threats, these guardians take it upon themselves to protect their community.
