#85. Tim Zheng, My Gift to America
Hanfu of red, white, and blue. We are america. We all belong here. With or without a gift. The implication of requiring a gift, or even highlighting one’s gift to America assumes a subservient state. Why would one need to give a gift to their own home? This reinforces the harmful idea that certain groups must earn their place through exceptionalism, to be one of the “good one,” and reinforces problematic model minority stereotypes. This type of thinking sabotages even our unique cultural heritage, sacrificing the arts and history for “useful” trades to make money, and pits asian americans as the perpetual foreigner, who must always serve “real” America. We are asian american. We are asian, and american. We should be recognized as such regardless of usefulness or achievement. Every line in these verses were written with intentionality and purpose. Listen, and think.
